Sermon Revelation 10

Revelation 10: The Open Little Book and God's Final Call

Main Scripture: Revelation Chapter 10

Introduction

Revelation 10 is one of the most encouraging chapters in the book of Revelation. Between the sounding of the sixth and seventh trumpets, God presents a special message of hope, understanding, and mission.

The chapter introduces a mighty angel descending from heaven with a little book already opened. The Apostle John is instructed to take and eat the book. It tastes sweet in his mouth but becomes bitter in his stomach. Through this experience, God reveals important truths about prophecy, faith, disappointment, and the mission of His people in the last days.

1. The Mighty Angel from Heaven

Revelation 10 verse 1

"Then I saw another mighty angel coming down from heaven, clothed with a cloud. And a rainbow was on his head, his face was like the sun, and his feet like pillars of fire."

The description of this mighty angel reflects divine authority and heavenly glory. The cloud represents God's presence. The rainbow symbolizes His covenant and mercy. The face shining like the sun reveals heavenly majesty, while the feet of fire signify judgment and strength.

This vision reminds us that even when the world seems chaotic, Heaven remains in complete control.

Spiritual Lesson

God has not abandoned this world. Christ continues to direct the course of history according to His perfect plan.

2. The Open Little Book

Revelation 10 verse 2

"He had a little book open in his hand."

Unlike the sealed scroll of Revelation 5, this book is open. Many historicist interpreters understand this little book as representing the prophecies of Daniel, especially those connected with the time of the end.

For centuries certain prophetic truths remained sealed, but God promised that a time would come when they would be understood more clearly.

The open book symbolizes:

  • Prophetic understanding;
  • Divine revelation;
  • The unfolding of God's plan;
  • Preparation for Christ's return.

Spiritual Lesson

God does not leave His people in darkness. He reveals truth according to His timetable and purpose.

3. The Seven Thunders

Revelation 10 verses 3-4

The mighty angel cries with a loud voice, and seven thunders answer. John prepares to write what he hears, but a voice from heaven commands him not to record their message.

"Seal up the things which the seven thunders uttered, and do not write them."

This event teaches that not every detail of God's plan has been revealed to humanity.

There are mysteries known only to God that will become clear in His appointed time.

Spiritual Lesson

Faith trusts God not only for what He has revealed but also for what He has chosen to keep hidden.

4. There Will Be Delay No Longer

Revelation 10 verses 5-7

The angel lifts his hand toward heaven and makes a solemn declaration:

"There should be delay no longer."

This statement points to the completion of God's prophetic timetable and the movement of history toward its final events.

The passage also declares that the mystery of God will be finished.

The mystery of God refers to His plan of salvation, His work of redemption through Christ, and His purpose of restoring humanity.

Spiritual Lesson

History is not moving randomly. Every event is advancing toward the fulfillment of God's eternal purpose.

5. The Sweet and Bitter Experience

Revelation 10 verses 8-10

John receives a remarkable command:

"Take and eat the little book."

As he obeys, the book tastes sweet as honey in his mouth but becomes bitter in his stomach.

This symbolizes the joy that comes from discovering God's truth and understanding prophecy. Yet it also illustrates the disappointment that can occur when human expectations do not unfold exactly as anticipated.

Even in moments of disappointment, God's purpose continues.

Spiritual Lesson

Temporary disappointment does not mean God has failed. Often He uses painful experiences to prepare His people for greater service.

6. The Final Commission

Revelation 10 verse 11

"You must prophesy again about many peoples, nations, tongues, and kings."

After the bitter experience, John is not told to stop. Instead, he receives a renewed commission.

God's message must continue to be proclaimed to the entire world.

Prophecy was never given merely to satisfy curiosity. It was given to prepare hearts for salvation and to call people to faithfulness.

Spiritual Lesson

The mission of God's people continues until Christ returns.

Conclusion

Revelation 10 presents a powerful message for those living near the close of earth's history.

  • God remains in control.
  • Prophetic truth is revealed at the proper time.
  • Some mysteries remain known only to God.
  • The plan of salvation is moving toward completion.
  • Disappointment is not the end of God's work.
  • The mission of proclaiming truth continues.

The open book reminds us that Heaven is still speaking. God continues to call men and women to understand His Word and share His message with the world.

Final Appeal

Today, the little book remains open. The prophetic message has been revealed. The call of God continues to echo throughout the world.

The question is no longer whether God has spoken. The question is whether we will respond.

Will we accept His truth? Will we follow His leading? Will we share His message with others?

The book is open.

The message has been given.

The mission continues.

May each of us answer the call of Heaven and say:

"Here am I, Lord. Send me."

Amen.
